I’ve been fortunate enough to enjoy good health for pretty much all my life. I’ve hardly ever been ill, and can’t remember the last time I had a cold or virus of any kind – or certainly not that lasted more than half a day or so. So when I completely lost all my energy and was feeling run down all the time it was quite a shock to my system, and I was even finding it hard to get up in the morning. Over the course of about 12 months I’d seen my doctor many times and had all the tests he threw at me, but every one showed nothing wrong.
Fortunately a friend of mine is a dietician and she intimated that I should look into doing a detox, and generally learning about how to detox your body with a view to changing my eating habits. It looked like detoxing had a lot of health benefits, so took it upon myself to learn as much about the process as possible, and get to grips with what is really involved and why the natural health industry advocate following a detox diet and recommend starting with the 7 day detox diet so avidly.
Something else she recommended I try was a foot detox. I now treat myself to a foot massage at least once a week, but as a suitable alternative, the foot detox patches can work just as well – but doing it this way you miss out on the relaxing foot massage at the same time
Here’s some healthy detox diet tips I discovered.
Herbal teas are just as good as water
One of the most important things you need to is drink lots of water while you are following a detoxification diet as it will prevent the build up of toxins and man made chemicals in your body. It also helps to prevent constipation, helps your internal organs function more efficiently, and improves your complexion. Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water each day (about 2 liters), although you will need more in hot weather or on days when you are exercising.
As a rule of thumb, for every hour that your exercise each day, drink an extra 2 glasses of water. The best water to drink is home filtered tap water, or boiled water which has cooled, or bottled water. Ideally drink water that is at room temperature. Herbal teas are a great alternative in helping your reach your daily quote – loose leaf tea is the better option if it’s available. Peppermint, camomile, dandelion root, horsetail and yarrow in particular are great choices as their essential oils help boost the detox process. Roibosch and green tea is especially healthy as it is a rich source of natural antioxidants.
Do You Need To Go Organic
When you’re following a detox diet you don’t need to buy everything organic, as organic produce is normally higher priced than non organic equivalents, but if you can manage one or two organic foods that would be great.
If you can’t find or afford organic fruits and veggies, it’s not a problem. It’s more important that you eat plentiful amounts of fresh foods regardless of them being organic or not, instead of eating too few of them. Nonetheless, there’s a lot of health benefits to having as much as possible of organic produce on a healthy detox diet.
The use of artificial chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers are not allowed when growing organic foods, so they have very little or no potentially toxic man made chemicals. Organic farming is a hotly debated and controversial topic because there is evidence that the ‘cocktail’ effect of these pesticides are linked to some of the serious health conditions of today.
Organic foods undergo minimal processing. The end result being that organic foods are free from artificial additives and hydrogenated fats. Certain organic foods taste better and have more flavor.
